ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE UNIVERSITY
STANDARDS FOR PUBLICATION TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) encourages faculty and staff to communicate information freely and openly on the World Wide Web within the constraints of existing laws and policies. The publication criteria stipulated in this document include minimal stylistic consistency standards and some guidance on the legal and procedural nuances of communicating on the World Wide Web. These standards address official home pages and other official pages. This document also contains some guidelines and useful suggestions for all pages published by members of the Armstrong community. These guidelines augment existing Armstrong computer account agreements, the Armstrong Atlantic State University Information Technology Security Policy, and the Armstrong Atlantic State University Network Acceptable Use Policy.
RESTRICTIONS
Use of Armstrong Atlantic State University web servers for personal monetary gain is strictly prohibited. Including links to specifically for-profit sites with the express purpose of conducting business transactions is likewise prohibited. Web pages in the Armstrong domain may link to other official pages on this site, other educational or non profit organizations, pages created or maintained by Armstrong faculty or staff and online materials for research or educational purposes.
Although student workers are often employed to create and maintain departmental web pages, students are not allowed to publish (upload) material to the official Armstrong web site. Web pages created or altered by students should be approved and published by an Armstrong faculty or staff member. Passwords that allow an individual to publish material to the web server may not be shared with students.
No official Armstrong web page may link to a student web page. Student organizations have reserved space on the Armstrong web server. The sponsor of the student organization can find out how to use that space by contacting the Help Desk at 344-2518 or e-mail helpdesk@armstrong.edu
SITE DESIGN RESPONSIBILITIES
The AASU main page will be developed and maintained by the Computer and Information Services department (CIS) with input from University Relations. All second level index pages will be designed and maintained by the CIS Department with input from University Relations and should follow a consistent theme. The third level College pages will be designed and maintained by the CIS Department with input from the College Deans or a representative. Other official home pages, such as departmental pages, will be designed and maintained by the departments or organizations they represent. Training and Media is available to help with those pages as needed.
OFFICIAL HOME PAGES
For the purposes of these standards, an official home page is a single page that introduces an established University department, committee or organization and provides links to more detailed information about that unit. These pages must incorporate the standards detailed in this document. To ensure continuity, to maintain a consistent image and to improve access to electronic information published by Armstrong, the CIS Department reserves the right to monitor and review the official home pages for the University's colleges, departments and other major units.
Each official home or index page will have the official Armstrong footer at the bottom. The footer as it currently appears is at the bottom of this document. The footer is placed in the index.html page using a server side include. Using a text editor or an html editor such as FrontPage, insert the following above the </body> tag at the bottom of the file:
<!-- #include virtual="footer.txt" -->
If help is needed contact the Help Desk at 344-2518 or email helpdesk@armstrong.edu
Additional official Armstrong Atlantic footers may be inserted on the inside pages if desired using the same technique. Inclusion of the footer is only required on the official home (index) page.
Information on each official campus unit web server must be kept up to date. A date last modified placed on the bottom of the page is desired. Units will be notified when pages are found to be out of date and pages should be updated in a timely manner or all links to the page will be removed.
Each campus unit creating an official campus unit home page is responsible for ensuring that the information is factually accurate and of the highest editorial standards for spelling, punctuation, grammar, , etc.
For security reasons use of downloaded or unit written CGI scripts is prohibited unless approved by CIS. To request implementation of a script, contact the Help Desk at 344-2518 or e-mail helpdesk@armstrong.edu
All unit pages must be in compliance with all appropriate Armstrong campus policies and procedures, including computer account agreements and the Armstrong Atlantic State University Network Acceptable Use Policy. Users should refrain from all acts that waste or prevent others from using network resources and from using those resources in whatever ways have been proscribed by the university and the laws of the state and federal governments. Any World Wide Web resource that makes excessive use of network bandwidth may be terminated in accordance with these policies.
OTHER OFFICIAL PAGES
Pages related in any way to the programs of the university and its departments may be considered official pages. It is strongly encouraged that official pages (other than Official Home Pages for which requirements are given above) include some or all of the following elements when it is reasonable, practical, and appropriate to do so. (It is recognized that it is often not practical to alter pre-existing materials when making them accessible via the World Wide Web. It is also recognized that it is appropriate to omit some or all of the following elements when the same information is apparent from the context, available via a link and so forth.)
